Let’s face it, if you buy quality clothes you want them to last as long as possible because quality clothing is not cheap. One of the best ways to make sure that your clothes last as long as possible is to make sure that you wash them correctly and, to that end, those little tags that come attached to your clothes will tell you exactly what you need to do to make sure that your clothes aren’t ruined on wash day.
The biggest problem for most people is being able to actually decipher what those little tags are talking about. Of course it doesn’t help that the writing on them is sometimes so small it makes your head hurt and there are symbols that look like ancient hieroglyphics. But the simple fact is that if you don’t want to shrink your new sweater 5 sizes or turn your new white dress purple you’ll need to be able to decode the tags on your clothes and follow the instructions they give you.
Now, depending on the actual article of clothing that you’re washing and its importance you may not need to follow the tags 100% every time. For example, many items can just as easily be washed in cold water when they call for warm with no problems at all. But when it comes to your best clothing, the kind made with the most expensive materials, following the label to the letter is probably a good idea.
For example if the tag has the words ‘only’, ‘no’ or ‘do not’ on them, such as ‘dry clean only’, ‘no bleach’ or ‘do not tumble dry’ you should definitely pay attention. These definitive words are there because the manufacturer knows that to use or do these specific things will almost always ruin whatever it is you’re washing.
Conversely if there isn’t anything mentioned in the way of bleach, tumble dryers or dry cleaning you can pretty much clean the item the way you clean most of your other clothes. Frankly, if you followed the specific instructions for each and every garment a regular load of clothes would take you all day to clean.
In the end using a little bit of common sense will usually suffice. Read the label, put like with like and whatever you do don’t let don’t let your man near the washer and you’ll probably do just fine.
